A picture frame is a common accessory that you can find in everyone’s house. While some prefer to keep it in their living room, there are others who keep the pictures of their loved ones on their bedside tables. However, it may not be possible for you to carry a picture frame containing the photo of your loved ones wherever you go. This constraint has led to the invention of digital picture frames which has the same functionality as that of a traditional picture frame, but it allows you to carry it everywhere.

A digital picture frame, also known as digital photo frame is basically an LCD monitor with a frame surrounding it all around. As opposed to a traditional picture frame, it allows you to store thousands of pictures, which are displayed on the monitor in a slide show format. This is possible due to the built in storage capacity in a digital picture frame. Usually, a digital picture frame can support up to 12 megapixels image files. It is compatible with most digital camera stored JPEG images, and in some cases, motion files as well. Only certain higher end digital picture frames are capable of playing short movies previously recorded in a camera.

Some common characteristics of digital picture frames are vertical or horizontal frame, easy-to-use on-screen menu, pause and reverse buttons, transition and display buttons, and automatic scaling of large pictures to fit the screen. The compatibility of a digital picture frame with USB cables, USB card readers, USB cameras, AC power adapters with cable, Multi Media Card, Smart Media, Secure Digital (SD), and Memory Stick with CD-ROM make it truly a gadget of today’s time.

Although, there are many types of digital photo frames, the one with a 1.1″ or 1.5″ LCD screen is the most popular choice. It is because this small sized digital picture frame is commonly used as a keyring which can be taken to every place. Some of the features found in such digital picture frame are internal memory of 8MB, compatibility to image formats JPG and BMP, auto slide show with intervals of up to 2 minutes and rechargeable Lithium battery that can be charged via USB cable, provided with the digital picture frame. There are also some digital picture frames with a larger screen. For instance, you can go for a digital picture frame with a 7″ or 10.4″ TFT LCD screen. Such picture frames support formats such as MP3, MP4, WMA, JPG, AVI, DIVX, and MPEG 1,2,34. They also come with double stereo speakers, remote control, and an audio/video cable. Blue LED illumination on the screen and automatic photo rotation are their two distinct features that make them all the more desirable. They also support SD, CF (Flash), MS, MMC, and XD Memory cards.
